The Sylvaner grape variety

Do you know the Sylvaner grape, which is found in Alsace for the wines of the same name?

Sylvaner is probably one of the oldest grape varieties still cultivated today. It comes from a natural crossing of two grape varieties, the Austrian White (österreichisch-weiss) and the Traminer. The Austrian White is a very old variety of the Danube which is practically no longer cultivated. It had its heyday when, in cuvée with the traminer, it produced the famous Grinzinger, one of Vienna's most popular wines.

The different names of the Sylvaner

Silvaner, silvain vert (or sylvain), gentil vert, round leaf, franken riesling, gruber, rhine or gros rhin in Switzerland, johannisberger, …

Where is the Sylvaner found?

  • In Austria, its country of origin, it has almost disappeared, only about fifty hectares survive with difficulty.
  • In Germany, where it only covers 5261 ha, holding third place behind Riesling and Müller-Thurgau.
  • In Alsace, where it did not arrive until the 2830th century, the sylvaner made a very honorable reputation. But there still, its surface decreases. From 1968 ha in 1446 there are only XNUMX ha left today.
  • Switzerland is the third most planted area with sylvaner (under the name Johannisberg).
  • It is also grown in Italy, Croatia, Hungary, Russia and more anecdotally in Australia and the United States where it is called Sonoma Riesling.

Sylvaner Features

Vine

For the sylvaner, nothing is more important than the characteristics and composition of the soil. It prefers poor and eroded soils on which it acquires more structure and complexity.

The fruit

It is recognized by orbicular leaves with ogival and wide teeth. The grapes are grouped in medium and compact clusters and can be recognized by their green color speckled with brown dots which evolve towards a golden yellow tint throughout the maturation. The beans have a relatively thick skin and a slightly tart flavor.

The dress

The color of wines made from this grape variety is clear, with pretty green reflections.

The aromas

It produces wines that are generally light, frank, pleasant, fresh and fruity. Its aromas of citrus fruits, white flowers and fresh grass both on the nose and on the palate reinforce the thirst-quenching sensation.

  • It is possible to convey ideas and values through an image, more quickly than with text.
  • The image improves your brand positioning in a specific universe, and promotes mentalization.
  • Financially, Picture Marketing is a real audience lever despite a reduced budget.
  • Video increases the virality of publications and can highlight your brand image through storytelling.
  • For example, computer graphics are a perfect ally in the context of a picture marketing strategy.
