The history of the Corsican vineyard
The major characteristics of a vineyard are not only due to its geographical location or its climate. They are often closely tied to a story. And the case of corsican vineyard is no exception!
The beginning of viticulture in Corsica goes back to Antiquity, under the impulse of the Greeks. Because of its ideal location on the sea lanes, it was able to prosper. When Corsica was attached to the Italian cities, the Corsican vineyard was replanted with Italian grape varieties. This explains today the presence of flagship Corsican grape varieties with an Italian sound.
Thanks to the arrival of the railway in Sète, Corsican wines could be more easily transported to the Parisian capital and the production doubled. But until the middle of the 20th century, viticulture remained a minor activity on the island.
After the Algerian war and the arrival of nearly 17 returnees, viticulture was relaunched on an industrial scale: the objective was to overtake Morocco and Algeria on the wholesale market. Wine was produced in quantity, on the flat land south of Bastia. Quality was left out. But with the crisis of the 000s, this strategy had to be abandoned. Thousands of hectares were uprooted, to replant only the best soils of Corsica, located between mountains and seaside.
Since the 1990s, a return to quality has been advocated by Corsican winegrowers who want to attract foreign markets thanks to the structure of their wine. The yields are reduced, the grape varieties chosen according to the adequacy of the soil and the climate and there are excellent Corsican wines at a relatively interesting price-quality ratio.
For the anecdote, to say that a wine is full-bodied, does not come from Corsica, but from the fact that the wine would have body. But Corsican wines belong to the category of full-bodied wines: they are tannic and have a beautiful structure.
